It began at a summer camp by the ocean.

In 1999, between semesters at theology school, Wade returned to the North Carolina sailing camp of his childhood — sixteen years after being a camper there himself. The shoreline had changed. A building that once stood above the water was almost completely underwater. The question that came to him that summer has shaped his work ever since:

"If this is happening here with sea level rise — what is happening on the islands? Here, we can move inland. But on the islands — to the people, where will they go?"

He came to this work not through science or academia, but through faith — and the conviction that the islanders' cause was the one he was given to carry.

Why "The Pouring Man"?

From scripture — "A man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you; follow him into the house that he enters" — and the age of Aquarius, the water-bearer. It's the promise that ordinary people, taking small steps, pour out change big enough to shift an age. SMALL STEPS · BIG CHANGES

🌿 "Be stewards of the earth"

In graduate school, Wade's Hebrew professor taught him that the famous Genesis command to "subdue the earth" is a mistranslation — the truer reading is "be stewards of the earth." A steward doesn't mow the vineyard down; a steward cultivates it. That one word became the foundation of everything that followed.

The Islander Mission · PRAER

"PRAER — just like prayer, without a Y."

Wade founded the Program to Relocate and Assist Environmental Refugees, taking the islanders' cause to the public square — petitioning the White House and the United Nations to give legal status to people displaced by rising seas.

"For them, global warming is not a political debate. It is something they are seeing every day of their lives — as they watch their homes become engulfed in rising seawater."

The Stakes

"If we cannot save the islanders and the islands, what hope is there for New York, London or Tokyo? There is none." — Mohamed Nasheed, President of the Maldives, quoted by Wade. Up to 250 million environmental refugees are predicted by 2050 — and still no legal status protects them.

The Hope

The solution phase is already here: half a million Australian homes with free power, sodium batteries making solar the cheapest energy on Earth. The abuses are no longer necessary — and the change is happening faster than anyone predicted.
